Basic Safety Tips for Exercise
- Always wear appropriate safety gear i.e., protective gear for biking and skating and appropriate shoes.
- Warm up before you exercise.
- Follow the 10% rule. Never increase your program more than 10% per week.
- Stop exercising if you experience severe pain, swelling, faint or dizziness.
- Choose proper foot wear. Invest in a good pair of walking, hiking or running shoes.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat, glasses and sunscreen.
- Protect yourself from mosquitoes and ticks. Always check for ticks after you bike or hike on trails.
- Carry an EpiPen on your person if allergic to bee stings. Make sure someone who is with you knows where it is and knows how to use it.
- Exercise with a companion.
- Carry a cell phone for emergencies.
- Bring and drink plenty of water throughout the activity to replaced lost fluids.
- Use appropriate equipment and clothing for the activity.
- Always let someone know where you are.
- When not familiar with surroundings, bring a map.
- Dress for the weather. Dress in layers and wear bright colored clothing. Layers help you adust to temperature changes.
